Kruger Park Walking Safari

Open 4x4 Game Drives

When you arrive at camp a qualified and experienced game ranger with his .458 rifle and his local Shangaan tracker, will be assigned to your group, for the duration of your walking safari.

For all your wildlife viewing, they will guide you on a combination of daily walks & game drives - early morning, late afternoon and at night.

On the open 4x4 game drives you search for animals whilst traversing through the bush, using the narrow dirt roads that have been formed over the years. The dirt roads criss-cross the bush in all directions - to water holes, across rivers, through open plains of grassland, thick woodland bush and even down dried river beds!

Although everyone is looking out for animals especially the Big Five, it's your local Shangaan tracker sitting on his trackers seat at the front of the Land Rover, who will do the spotting. If fresh animal tracks belonging to one of the Big Five are found on dirt road, your ranger will then use the Land Rover 'off road' following the tracks, driving further into the bush. We will follow any fresh Big Five track to ensure your chances of seeing all of the Big Five.

At the end of an afternoon game drive, as the sun starts to set, your ranger will park up the Land Rover next to a waterhole or in the middle of the bush. You are allowed to jump off and have a stretch, a call of nature and to enjoy 'sun downers' (drinks). A table is set up with a selection of drinks - beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks. Small snacks are also offered.

This traditional method of game viewing by 4x4 Land Rover is comfortable, safe, exciting and of course can be very rewarding.

Note

Although we operate our walking safaris & game drives in Big Five wilderness areas, there are no guarantees on Big Five sightings. We do however guarantee a very real bush experience!

The combination of walks and drives in the open 4x4 Land Rovers are conducted from both camps and are dependent on the weather & animal movements.
